ORPHEUS IN THE UNDERWORLD

Cape Town City Ballet proudly presents Veronica Paeper’s ORPHEUS IN THE UNDERWORLD from 12 to 21 June 2026 at Artscape.

This is a ballet bursting with humour, style and irresistible flair! Inspired by Jacques Offenbach’s classic comic operetta, this dazzling production set in the 1920’s features flapper girls, Mafia henchmen, Can-Can dancers, a glamorous penthouse swimming pool for the Gods! and a glorious score expertly arranged by Michael Tuffin.


With original designs by Peter Cazalet, this ballet is a wild, joyful ride through love, mischief and divine mayhem. This production will be accompanied by the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of Brandon Phillips.
When Eurydice escapes with Pluto, Orpheus is surprisingly delighted. However, with the meddling Gods and a nightclub in the Underworld, expect plenty of laughter and spectacle. A timeless favourite, this show guarantees pure fun and unforgettable entertainment!
