Between WWII and 1994, black artists living under Apartheid were deliberately excluded from participating in orchestral music and other Western classical arts. While white South Africans were benefiting from state-sponsored arts programmes, it was left to church programmes and music centres championed by black pioneers to keep music education and instrument tuition active in those years. Conductor, cellist and broadcaster Kutlwano Masote will look at how musicians from these projects went on to conquer international music stages, who the new pioneers are, and how we can work towards building a thriving orchestral landscape.
