Born Free is a powerful drama that interrogates what freedom truly means for South Africa’s post-apartheid generation. The play follows Kamuhelo, a passionate student activist who confronts systemic failures within the education system and the broader inequalities shaping his community. As he navigates rising political tensions and personal struggles, Kamuhelo is tempted by the lure of corruption, forcing him to choose between self-preservation and his commitment to meaningful change.
Through urgent dialogue and emotionally charged storytelling, Born Free captures the clash between youthful idealism and entrenched political realities, reflecting both the progress achieved and the persistent challenges facing contemporary South Africa. The production will be staged at Space.com at Joburg Theatre as part of the NextDraft partnership between POPArt and the Youth and Community Development Unit.
