THE 8TH BAG

About

The 8th Bag unfolds on an ordinary South African morning in the early 2000s, where seven men, strangers to one another, wait at a bus stop for transport to NdoShisa, a mythical place of restoration, prosperity, and certainty. Each carry two bags, one for the journey and another filled with inherited expectations, emotional weight, and unspoken pain. When told only one bag is allowed, they are forced to unpack their stories, confronting the versions of masculinity they were taught to carry.
What begins as release turns into revelation when the bus loops back to the same stop again and again, exposing the cycle of masculinity that is repeated, inherited, and rarely questioned. Tender rather than judgmental, the 8th Bag reflects on the burdens men carry and the fragile hope of breaking free. The production takes place at Joburg Theatre at Space.com, presented in partnership between POP Art and the Youth and Community Development Unit at Joburg Theatre.
