Vuleka Mbobo, Mbobo Vuleka [est 2015] directed by Nhlanhla Ngqaqu, is a sonic remembrance of one of the most vital movements in the post-apartheid epoch, the 2015 Fallist movement. The performance not only chronicles the memory and the essence of #feesmustfall #Rhodesmustfall #outsourcingmustfall but it captures this moment from iPhupho L’ka Biko’s perspective, as subjects of the movement themselves. The evening becomes a moment of reflection of what was, what is and what is to become.
This year marks the 10th year since the Fallist movement. Disgruntled by the state of universities and its exclusionary nature, university students across the country took to the streets of South Africa. The essence of the Fallist movement was the outcry for a decolonial, free and quality education, a curriculum which reflects the knowledges of African communities and histories thereof. The ensemble iPhupho L’ka Biko was also established in the same year by Nhlanhla Ngqaqu, who is the visionary behind the band & this performance. Immersed in the movement themselves, iPhupho L’ka Biko, through this sonic remembrance seeks to reflect on the journey towards what they define as a complete liberation of Africa.
