In this homage to Saartjie Baartman, Diana Ferrus explores her famous poem about the historic icon, and the influence of the poem in securing the return of Sarah’s remains to South Africa. The poem has been absorbed into the French legal canon regarding colonial appropriation. Some of South Africa’s most celebrated composers and performers each bring an original interpretation of Saartjie’s story to the stage in this once-off debut performance. The performances combine Western instruments and a cross-section of traditional and indigenous instruments that celebrate Sarah’s legacy on behalf of all South Africans.
