In the heart of a secluded South African rural village, where cultural legacy and traditional lineage hold immense power, Lolea tells the gripping story of a married couple torn between love and their deeply rooted cultural and religious beliefs.
The play follows Lolea, a character whose name translates to "empty," "dry," or "drought" in SeTswana, symbolizing the emotional void and struggle at the core of the narrative. Set against a backdrop where tradition reigns supreme, the couple's relationship began under strained circumstances but blossomed into a passionate love. Together, they dream of building a family and creating a lasting legacy—one that will shape their future.
However, as their opposing cultural and religious backgrounds resurface, their once-strong bond is tested, leading them to confront the pressure of choosing between loyalty to their beliefs and the desire to achieve their deepest aspirations. How far will they go in breaking their own boundaries to forge a path towards happiness and unity?
With themes of identity, loyalty, and the intersection of personal desire and societal expectations, Lolea challenges its characters—and its audience—to reflect on the sacrifices we make for love, family, and tradition.
This production is presented in partnership with Youth and Community Development, fostering conversation and reflection about cultural heritage, faith, and the complexities of modern relationships. Don't miss this emotionally charged, thought-provoking theatre experience that will leave you questioning the balance between personal conviction and the pursuit of a shared dream.
