In 1952, South Africa's despised Pass Laws were extended to include African women. The resulting outrage was to inspire a sense of solidarity amongst South African women which managed to transcend the very race barriers which the state was intent on imposing.
The result was the rise of an extraordinary, multi-cultural women's movement, which took direct aim at the state by organising a famous march to the Union Buildings on August 9th, 1956.
YOU STRIKE THE ROCK tracks the lives of the four leaders of this march: Lilian Ngoyi, Helen Joseph, Rahima Moosa and Sophie de Bruyn.
