THE ART OF THE BOW AFRICAN MUSIC Marginalised, then appropriated and intellectualized, the musical bow is one of the most misrepresented musical instruments of Africa. In The Art of the Bow, uhadi and umrhubhe mavens Madosini Mpahleni and Mantombi Matotiyana take the UCT Ibuyambo Orchestra back to the days when the bow embodied a timeless understanding of music and life. Under the direction of Dizu Plaatjies this concert refashions a series of Xhosa bow songs for an ensemble of pan-African traditional instruments

We are thrilled to welcome Opera School alumna, Pumeza Matshikiza, to the Baxter Concert Hall for the first in our Masterclass Series for 2022. Described as “one of today’s most exciting new operatic voices” (Independent), South African soprano Pumeza Matshikiza is one of today’s rising opera stars. Being an exclusive Decca Classics recording artist, she already released two albums: her debut album “Voice of Hope”, featuring arias and traditional and popular African songs, and “Arias” with a selection of operatic arias and songs from her current repertoire.

The evening will commence with a short chat between Jeremy Silver and Pumeza Matshikiza about her life and career since leaving UCT.

THREE CHOIR FESTIVAL A feast of choral music: the choirs share the stage: The UCT choir performs in the Baxter for the first time since Covid struck. Joining them is the Cape Town Youth Choir in their last concert before departing for Germany where they will participate in the prestigious Marktoberdorf International Chamber Choir. competition. Rounding off the concert is one of the best university choirs in the USA, the Missouri State University Chorale, conducted by Cameron LaBarr.
