In December 2023, a student submitted a Master’s dissertation, most likely being the last student Professor Piet Croucamp supervised who did not use AI to harvest information and data in answering the research question. ChatGPT caused consternation at educational institutions when it was introduced last year. Contrary to expectations, universities are often bureaucratic and reluctant to innovate. However, AI is set to redefine university education, ushering in an era of personalised learning and intelligent algorithms. What will the educational landscape look like in the future? We might have to wait until we`ve arrived before we know.
