The Luthuli Walk & Fun Run is an annual commemorative event organized by the Luthuli Museum with partners including the Enterprise iLembe; KwaDukuza Municipality; iLembe District Municipality; KZN Sports, Arts and Culture and the United Congregational Church of Groutville and will be taking place on the 20th of July 2024. The Luthuli Walk follows the last footsteps of Chief Albert Luthuli on 21 July 1967 when he was reportedly hit by a train on a railway bridge over the uMvoti River. The event also celebrates the life and achievements of Chief Albert Luthuli, Africa’s first Nobel Peace Laureate and champion for human rights, peace, justice and democracy.
The objectives of the Luthuli Walk and Fun Run are to built partnerships; highlight the history and heritage within the district; promote tourism and increase visitor numbers and economic spend within the district; as a sporting event, deepen social cohesion and a promote a healthy lifestyle. Overall, on the day, the event intends to promote small business entrepreneurship; and encourage families to spend quality time in the footsteps of Chief Albert Luthuli.
In 7,7km Fun Run route trail starts at the Luthuli Museum in Groutville and covers various local spots and connecting roads namely, Cranbrook; Malende; Hangoes; Nokukhanya Luthuli Street and ending at the Groutville Market Grounds. The fun run offers participants the freedom to walk and run at their own pace in celebrating health, wellness and diversity.
