Testimony to this is the successful Speurder Sammi series by Crystal Donna Roberts, former attendee of a Jakes Gerwel Foundation mentorship programme. Fiona van Kerwel’s collection Leë blikkies vol liefde en ander verhale also appeals to young readers. But if you look at the literacy crisis in the country, you may well ask: Do children really read enough? Or are the number of readers growing as more books are published? Thérèse Hulme, author of My word! and facilitator of the Jakes Gerwel Foundation’s narrative learning initiative in the Cape Flats, leads the discussion.
