Janni Younge’s Firebird, created with choreographer Jay Pather, reimagines Stravinsky’s score as a contemporary South African fusion of puppetry and dance. Drawing on the symbolic roots of Fokine’s original, the production centres on the Seeker, a young woman on a quest to claim her creative power. Her journey unfolds as an intense inner struggle, navigating the pull of opposing forces and learning to integrate them. Through this balancing, she moves toward a state of free and fully realised creative expression.
