There has been a ‘seaweed revolution’ of production for multiple uses through cultivation (aquaculture) in Asia in the last 50 years. Seaweed cultivation has numerous documented benefits, and South Africa has had a small but significant seaweed industry, largely based on collections from natural populations, for many years.
