The Train Driver

Starring Dr. John Kani & Dawid Minaar, The Market Theatre presents Athol Fugard’s The Train Driver directed by Charmaine Weir-Smith.

Inspired by a true story of a black woman who killed herself and her 3 children by stepping in front of a train.

The play focuses on Afrikaaner train-driver, Roelf who, traumatised, goes to a squatter camp, where the nameless dead are buried, to seek the grave of the woman.

Here he meets a poor black gravedigger, Simon, to whom he unburdens his troubled conscience.
