The Suitcase

Returning from its extensive UK tour, James Ngcobo’s adaptation of Es’kia Mpahlele’s short story, The Suitcase, comes to the Market stage.

Set in the 1950s in Umkhumbane, this story of a young couple who leave home for the city, intending to return wealthy and immune from social censure.

The pressures of the city, unemployment and poverty take their toll and the husband steals a suitcase left on a bus.

This action leads to frightening consequences, dramatic turns and unexpected twists.
