RHYTHM COLOUR

RHYTHM COLOUR

About

Rhythm Colour, was created in 2002 for the National Arts Festival as Maqoma’s Standard Bank Young Artist commission. It poignantly conjures the mood surrounding Sam Nzima’s iconic image of that fateful day of the 16th of June 1976: a dying Hector Pieterson, being carried by Mbuyisa Makhubu.

Memories of retaliation, chaos, confusion, lack of trust in the system, finger-pointing, and erupting fires are a springboard for this historical work.
Aesthetically, it juxtaposes video and live music with metaphor-driven dance performance to create a multidimensional and rich experience.
