TRIBUTE TO TSIETSI MASHININI

TRIBUTE TO TSIETSI MASHININI

About

More than thirty years ago, Tsietsi Mashinini, at the tender age of nineteen, led hundreds of thousands of students, through the streets of Soweto on a march that was to change the course of history in South Africa. Today the name Tsietsi Mashinini, has assumed heroic and cult status in the minds of millions of South Africans.

In 1976, Tsietsi Mashinini was a standard nine pupil at Morris Isaacson High School in Soweto. When students in Soweto decided to take action against the government for forcing them to use Afrikaans as a medium of instruction, Tsietsi was a natural choice for the leadership position.
