About

Florence and Wine in the Wilderness are two short plays written by American writer Alice Childress, who was a beacon of hope known for opening doors for countless black playwrights, actors and producers, particularly Lorraine Hansberry and Ntozake Shange and was also the first black women to win an Obie Award.

2018 Fleur du cap nominee for best new director Nwabisa Plaatjie continues the conversation on decolonization through staging the symbols visible in Childress’s Florence and Wine in the Wilderness explores how classism and sexism are connected to the experience of being a black woman.
